Elementary

Students attend one art class per week.

The Elementary Art Curriculum is a combination of Art History and Art Appreciation.

Students are introduced to the art works, art practices and the cultural influences of art around the world, through the ages, which correspends to their grade level's Social Studies units. The curriculum aims to instill in the student an awareness and appreciation for different people from various cultures through their art, across generations, and to see how creativity and the concept of beauty is interpreted in many ways.

Secondary

Aims:

To instil and inspire conifidence in all students through education, motivation, encouragement and positive reinforcement. The art teacher makes it his goal to work one-on-one with each student as much as possible. In art, students are allowed to 'fail' and are encouraged to learn from their mistakes. We believe that every student can foster creativity and should be encouraged to explore; to discover that anything is possible, given the will to try and to develop the right skills.

Skills, topics and themes:

Examples of lessons and activties in the course of a year include:

- drawing still lifes: learning about composition, assessing light sources and noticing reflected light and shadows, using shading to give three dimensional depth

- drawing individual creative compositions

- mutli-media pictures

- using pattern and geometric shape to create interesting compositions

- painting: mixing colours to create a range of tones; creating colour compositions using paint
